However, there are some new year resolutions you should make to ensure that your HVAC system stays in tip-top shape for the coming years.

Regular Air Filter Changes

One of the best resolutions that you can make for your HVAC system is to regularly change the air filter. Your air filter is what collects unwanted debris and pollutants from your venting system and keeps them from the air that your family breaths in. When the filter is not changed regularly, the debris will build up to a point where it's hard for air to pass through. This makes your HVAC system work much harder to push cold or warm air through your vents.

Air filters should be changed, on average, every three months. The exact amount of time is going to be highly dependent on your lifestyle. If you have pets or young children, you'll likely need to change your filter more often. Consider checking it once every single month. If you can't see through the filter, then it means that it's time to change it out for a fresh one.

Schedule Preventative Maintenance

It can be easy to put off maintenance of your system. Whether you don't seem to have time to meet up with your HVAC professional or you don't have the money laying around to afford a tune-up, there are many reasons that can stop you from getting the preventative maintenance that you need. The reality is that preventative maintenance is reasonably affordable for most and, a little money spent now can save you thousands later on.

It's a good idea to have preventative maintenance performed twice a year. You'll want to have your air conditioning unit checked out in the early spring and have your furnace checked out in the early fall to prep it for the harsh winter months ahead. Not only will your HVAC technician lubricate your system to ensure it's working optimally, but they'll also alert you of any potential performance issues before they become massive problems later on.
