Now that it's Fall, we are all thinking of Halloween. Around this time of the year, we think of our favorite horror movies. Some classic Halloween movies that come to mind are Halloween, Alien, and The Omen.

Haunted houses are probably the most popular types of Halloween movies because they hit close to home. We have all heard a noise in the middle of the night and wondered what it could be. The noise probably isn't a ghost but an HVAC unit in need of repair. Instead of a ghost, your HVAC system could be haunting your home.

The Chilly Room

You notice that the rest of your home is the correct temperature, but one room is always cold. During the winter months, you could even see your breath. Our first thoughts are the many haunted house movie scenes. A poltergeist or angry spirit might not be the culprit this time. It could be a damaged air duct that blocks airflow to the room.

A room with a blocked vent will put extra strain on the HVAC system, which uses more energy. Like changing the oil in a car, the air filters for the system should be changed regularly. Leaks can form from the line contracting and expanding or a broken seal around the vent. A more severe issue could be an undersized system.

Wails and Bangs

Bumps in the night are often seen in horror movies. Unexplained noises at night, such as crashes, screeches, or banging can be scary. You may think to call a ghost hunter, but your first call should be to us to look at your HVAC system. Screeching noises could be caused by belt or motor issues. Banging can be caused by a delayed gas ignition or the metal ductwork rattling.

If you think it could be a noisy motor bearing or belt, talk to one of our HVAC technicians. Common lubricants aren't for HVAC systems, but a damaged belt is easy to replace. The delayed gas ignition is caused by gas buildup, which will damage the system. The ductwork can get noisy from use, but changing the filter can prevent that.

The Closing Door

We see inanimate objects moving on their own in haunted house movies. You see a creaky door slowly closing on its own and think it may be paranormal. It may not be a mischievous ghost moving your chandelier, but a draft caused by your HVAC system.
