Types of Boilers for Homes

Most homes throughout the country are heated with either a furnace or a boiler. A boiler works by heating water inside of a tank. The tank is connected to a series of pipes and radiators that flow throughout a home. Some boilers are heated by extremely hot water, while others are heated with the steam produced by the boiler.

Powering Your Boiler

Most boiler systems sit on top of a burner that is heated by an external source of fuel. The most common fuel used for heating in the United States is natural gas. The natural gas is typically piped right into the home via a city pipeline that runs underneath the city's streets. For others in rural areas, propane gas or heating oil is a common fuel source. These tend to be more expensive options than natural gas, but they're all that is available for those who don't live in a place where city hookups exist.

Types Of Boiler Systems

There are two main types of boiler systems that are used throughout the country. These include steam boilers and hot water boilers. Steam boilers make steam that is pumped throughout the piping system in a home to the radiators. Hot water boilers heat water until it's piping hot and then pump that hot water throughout the baseboards or radiators in a home.

Things To Consider When Buying A New Boiler

You'll want to purchase a boiler that runs on the existing system that you have in your home. For example, if you currently have a steam boiler system, you'll need to purchase a steam boiler. Next, you'll want to evaluate the potential energy-efficiency of any new boiler system. The less fuel a system uses to heat the water or turn that water into steam, the better.

The next factor that you'll want to consider is the size of the boiler. You'll need to get a size that can produce the amount of heat you need without overdoing it. If you get a boiler that is too small, it won't keep your home warm. If you get a boiler that is way too big, it will only eat up more fuel than is necessary to heat your home. Knowing the square footage of your home will play a big role in the size of the boiler that you'll need to successfully heat your home this winter season.
