HVAC Repair vs. Replacement: Which is the Better Option?

Having an HVAC system to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter is a must. As your HVAC system approaches the end of its lifespan, many of its internal components are going to fail. You should know these tips that can tell you when it's time to pay for repairs or to invest in a brand new system.

Signs That It's Time For a Replacement System

There are some key signs that can show you that it's time to think about getting a new HVAC system. These include:

  • Your System is 10 Years or Older. Most HVAC systems last between 10 and 15 years. If your system is already over 10 years old, it's not worth investing a lot of money in repairing it. Rather, your money is better spent on a replacement system that will last you for another 10 to 15 years.
  • Repair Costs Equal At Least Half the Cost of a New System. Another sign that you need a replacement system as opposed to repairs is when the repair costs are high. If the total cost of repairs is at least half of the cost of a new system, then it's best to spend your money on a new system.

Repairs can end up being a real money pit for homeowners who keep trying to fix their aging HVAC system. If your system has required more than one repair in the last year, then it's time to think about replacing it. Any good HVAC system shouldn't need repairs every year to run as it should.

Signs That Repairs Will Do

One of the most common scenarios where repairs will work is when they're inexpensive. If repairs are going to be only a couple of hundred dollars, then it's worth it to get your system repaired. Buying a whole new system is an investment that costs thousands of dollars.

If you have a newer HVAC system that is eight years or younger, then it's not worth investing in a new one. Remember that most HVAC systems can last for between 10 and 15 years. You still have quite a bit of life left in your system before it needs a replacement.
