How Does Air Conditioning Work?

The Air Conditioning Unit

Air conditioning works by collecting hot air in a room and cooling it. Unlike what some may think, air conditioners (AC) were not originally made for human comfort but to facilitate the manufacturing process of a publishing company. Nowadays, an AC is commonly used during the summer to keep homes and business premises cool. It is designed to work in the same way as your refrigerator.

The only difference between the two gadgets is that an air conditioner cools a large space. The air conditioner works under a simple scientific principle and through some mechanical installations. Some people only associate an AC with cold. However, it involves the transfer of heat in a certain space.

When the hot air in a room is removed, the remaining cold air helps to cool the space. Traditionally, people used different ways of keeping their homes cool during the hot weather. However, modern air conditioners have proven to be more effective in doing the work. Every AC has a thermostat which monitors the temperature in a room to ensure that it remains near the user’s preferred level. In this article, you will understand how the different parts of an AC work. Lets breakdown the different parts of an air conditioner into three sections:

How Does Air Conditioning Work?

Evaporator

An evaporator works by using a refrigerant gas to collect the heat in a room. The refrigerant gas is responsible for absorbing heat which then evaporates as a gas. The evaporator is located in the indoor unit of an air conditioner. Most ACs use hydrofluorocarbons and hydrocarbon as the refrigerant gases.

Compressor and Condenser

The compression of the refrigerant gases occurs in the compressor by increasing its temperature. It is part of the outdoor unit of your air conditioner. The combined gas law is used in this section as the pressure is increased to increase the temperature.

On the other hand, the condenser coil works by receiving the high pressure and temperature from the compressor. One of the components of a condenser is a hot refrigerant gas. It is used to transfer heat to the outdoor air.

Expansion Valve

Expansion valves also operates under the combined gas law. The expansion valve of an air conditioner helps to lower the pressure of the refrigerant gas used and hence cools it down. Once the pressure has reduced, the liquid changes to a gaseous form. The valve also regulates the amount of the refrigerant liquid that is entering the evaporator.

Jake is amazing! We reached out to get a quote for a mini-split system to cool our server room, and Jake exceeded our expectations. He recommended a more cost-effective solution that has provided us with incredible results. His out-of-the-box thinking and thoughtfulness are so impressive. I had six other HVAC companies provide quotes, but Jake was the only one who made sustainable and well-considered suggestions. The office staff is also super friendly and helpful!

I’m glad I called Master Mechanical for a second opinion. They saved me $1000 over the quote for the same repair from another HVAC company. They were professional on time and fixed my unit same day. They also weren’t pushing upsales. They did let me know my options, but unlike the other company, Master Mechanical didn’t try using scare tactics to get me to buy additional services. • Repaired My Boiler Instead of Pushing an Unnecessary Replacement
    Kathleen Ferraro
I am so grateful to Master Mechanical for repairing my old boiler. Danny Chee is very knowledgeable and was able to figure out the problems and repair them. Plus he is a very nice, polite person. He made sure everything was working correctly before leaving, even after 5:00. The people on the phone, Paul and a woman whose name I can't recall, are professional and helpful. I received texts and emails confirming appointments and letting me know when Danny was on his way. They could have sold me a new boiler but instead fixed the old one at a fraction of the cost. I highly recommend them and will continue to rely on them in the future.
